YOU GAVE ME A SONG: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF ALICE GERRARD

The Handsome Ladies are pleased to be a co-presenting community outreach partner for a new documentary about the life and music of Alice Gerrard. The film will be screened during the Mill Valley Film Festival in Mill Valley, CA on October 13.

Tickets:https://tickets.cafilm.org/websales/pages/info.aspx?evtinfo=623929~3ffb1e6a-c24d-489c-af55-d3c0accde4e1&epguid=a0a5438f-6778-4127-bb8f-8f292c417d1b&

About the film:

Having discovered that 'high lonesome sound' as a college student, Alice Gerrard became a pioneer of the traditional music canon. Perhaps best known for her longtime collaboration with Hazel Dickens (aka "Hazel & Alice")—a duo thought to be the first female bluegrass bandleaders—Gerrard’s career spans over 50 years. As a musician, singer, songwriter, student, and teacher of "old time" music, Gerrard bridged traditional and bluegrass music, inspiring the likes of Emmylou Harris and Laurie Lewis—who both appear in the film—among others. You Gave Me a Song reveals an unstoppable force, one who took part in an interracial music tour of the South to challenge segregation, received a Grammy® nomination at 80, and boldly blazed a path for new generations of women musicians to follow. In Gerrard’s world, the power of traditional music is in its connection to the working class, and to everyday life—and hers has been an extraordinary one, dedicated to the heart and soul of music.

Vern's Stage Ladies' Jam

Hi y'all! Are you going to the California Bluegrass Association's Fathers Day Bluegrass Festival?!? Lots of CA ladies are and we hope to see you there. As we've done the past three(?) years, we'll be hosting a very special jam at Vern's Stage. In years passed, there's been a high turnout, this year we will be ready to split into two jams if necessary.

Please bring yourself and your instrument, or nothing if you want to just observe. Typically folks bring beverages of their choice to share or to not share. Its just a good time for all. Thanks to Deb for helping to coordinate with festival directors to get the space for us. Hope to see you there!
