Our organization & programs.
The Handsome Ladies is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting and encouraging women bluegrassers of all levels within an inspired and connected community. With seven chapters around the country, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Nashville, Portland, Chicago, Raleigh and Seattle, we are growing quickly and continue to expand our programs to better serve our local communities. We host monthly jams and workshops in each of our chapter cities, manage a thriving Facebook group with over four hundred followers, and actively participate in local bluegrass festivals, radio shows, and music camps.
Through opportunity and resources, we support and encourage women bluegrassers of all levels, promoting the advancement of the individual musician within an inspired and connected community.
The Handsome Ladies strives to create a cultural shift in the bluegrass community in which more women participate in and feel welcomed at bluegrass jams, and where women feel empowered to rise to their desired level of musicianship.
Local Bluegrass Jams
The Handsome Ladies host monthly Ladies' jams in the local communities of San Francisco Bay Area, Nashville, Portland and Seattle. We strive to create safe spaces for women to improve their skills, learn new songs, build camaraderie with other local women in bluegrass, and most of all, have fun! Once a quarter we also host co-ed jams so our brothers in bluegrass can participate in the fun and show their support.
We are proud to manage a thriving Facebook group with hundreds of members, where women from around the nation (and world!) can connect, share resources, ideas and playing techniques and share photos and news from around the bluegrass community. The Picks is a program for female players who want to try their hand at live performance. Any time The Handsome Ladies is offered playing opportunities at small local gigs and radio shows, we assemble a pick-up band, aptly named "The Picks," from our community of female players. Gals who wish to participate can practice being on-stage in front of a live audience and get more comfortable with mics, monitors, playing in a band setting, and experience the rush of live performance. Interested in having The Picks to play at your next event? Give us a holler at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Handsome Ladies host educational workshops at select festivals and music camps around the nation, through which we teach beginner bluegrassers the basics of jam etiquette and playing in a group setting, and other relevant topics such as working with sound equipment on-stage. Past workshops have taken place at festivals like Father's Day Bluegrass Festival and Walker Creek Music Camp in CA, and Wintergrass in WA.
We host a variety of co-ed social events to help bluegrassers build community and mingle with others in a more casual, fun setting. Every year we host a Sadie Hawkins Campout in Penngrove, CA, where women and fellers in bluegrass can enjoy a potluck dinner, jamming in the barn all night, and the option to camp out overnight. We also host annual social mixers at Father's Day Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley, CA.
